It begins.

Classes started yesterday.  I teach only on Tuesdays and Thursdays, so classes began today for me.  And it was a good day.

I have the best of both worlds.  I am home with my kids.  But I also have a part-time job teaching, which is what I love.  Teaching.  Spring semester is much different from Fall semester.  In the Fall I teach five different classes.  And teaching five classes is sometimes overwhelming when I’m on campus only two days a week and am home with kids the rest of the time.  I don’t really have time to work at home, unless it’s after kids are in bed for the night, and by that time I want to be in bed, too, because I am NOT a night person.  At all. And at the same time, I really like teaching and I especially like the kids in my classes, so in the Fall I have a great time connecting with students.
Spring semester is much different.  I teach three classes - though one only meets for the first 8 weeks of the semester - and I supervise student teachers.  If you’re unfamiliar with what that means, I work with the college kids in their last semester who are going into real classrooms for practical teaching experience.  I meet with them weekly, go to the schools where they are student teaching and observe them in the classrooms and provide feedback.  And I really enjoy it.  It’s fun to get into schools again and be among the middle and high school kids, and it’s fun to see how far the student teachers have come in their years of college.  I’ve been teaching college long enough that the student teachers are people I had in class when they were freshmen and sophomores.  It’s a fun perspective.

And all the while, I’m able to be home with my kids.  Grandpa and Grandma watch them on Tuesday and Thursday while I’m in class (God bless them!), and otherwise I’m with them.

Yes.  I really have the best of both worlds.  And I love it. :D

Added bonus: You get to travel, and someone else pays for it!

I would like a teaching job where I get to do the teaching, but I don’t have to grade papers or go to meetings. Do you think something like that exists? Hehe…
