A little trip…

We’re on a little trip.

I serve as the president of the Alumni Board for St. Paul’s Lutheran High School in Concordia, Missouri.   We have a meeting this weekend, one of our thrice annual meetings, but this weekend also happens to be Homecoming weekend.  And Parent’s weekend.  So there’s lots going on.

My niece Alicia goes to school there now.  And I still have very strong ties to the people and places of that little town.  So we’re taking a little trip.

It’s our first longer trip with our kids.  The most consecutive time they have spent in a car traveling is two hours.  This trip takes about 4.5 hours.  God help us.

Here’s a glimpse of the campus:

A cool aerial shot of the campus. I snagged it from the St. Paul's website.

It’s a pretty big campus.  If you look closely, you can see there is an oval/rectangular drive all the way around.  It’s about a half mile around.  So, the campus is roughly a quarter mile from east to west.  With beautiful buildings.
Moeller dorm. Where I lived. And where Alicia now lives.

The Dining Hall.

Baepler. The main classroom building. Also where our lockers were.

Hey, that’s my school! :) We love car trips, although we got ours started about as soon as they were born. DVD’s and car-appropriate toys. Oh, and a mini van where they can be in separate rows if they’re bothering each other. And a blanket and pillow. Travel safe!

How did you choose 3:11am to post this? Hehe…

I’m assuming you’re there already since we talked on the phone yesterday. Happy Homecoming! Say “hi” to everybody for me.

Is it snowing there? Have a good time!!

  4. Peggy says:

Hey, some of these pictures I recognize! Have a great trip! How many generations of Royuks have attended this school?

    Several very important questions:
    1) Who did we play?
    2) Did we win?
    3) Did they/do they still run the 61 scissors trap?
    4) Did you do any cheers with the cheerleaders for old times sake?
    5) If you answered yes to #4, what cheer(s) did you do?
    6) If you answered yes to #4, did you pull anything and therefore are you now recovering?
    7) Does the victory bell still exist?
    8) Before the game, do the football players still do the slow march to the field thumping their pads and clapping their hands as they proceed? (I always loved that…got me totally pumped up).
I haven’t been back for a homecoming game since 1993 or 94. I wonder if my letter jacket still fits….

    1. Orrick
    2. No. It was ugly. 46-6. But Orrick has won state the past two years.
    3. Um. Maybe. What’s it look like? Contrary to popular belief, I did not play football. I was a cheerleader.
    4. Yes.
    5. B-L…U-E…P-R-I-D-E. Blue Pride! And, S-A-I-N-T-S. Saints.
    6. No. I’m very nimble still.
    7. Yes. It was just renovated by Kyle F., Shannon, Andy Jones, Mo, Craig R., and Richard. It looks very nice.
    8. We arrived after kick-off. But I would guess, yes. They still do that. Because, after all, Larry is still coaching. :)

I bet your letter jacket still fits. Unless you’ve gained 40 lbs. But I can’t even imagine what you would look like with 40 extra… And really, you should come back for Homecoming. It’s not like you have to get a hotel room.

Remind me. What position did you play? Receiver?

  7. Nate says:

I played flanker (or 6 back or wing back, whatever they are calling it these days). It was 90% receiver 10% running back. The flanker lines up one yard off the tight end/tackle and one yard behind the line. The 61 scissors trap was really the only running play for the flanker, it would be hard to identify from the sidelines. It’s basically just a run up the middle (the 61 means the 6 back runs up the 1 hole…get it?). Ah, the glory days.
