Storm. June 4, 2008.

Last night was another crazy Nebraska storm.  This one was worse than the one Lauren posted about last week.  Tornados (yes, plural, and apparently it’s acceptable to spell that with or without an e) touched down in several towns just 15 miles north of here, destroying houses, and we spent another evening in the basement pretending it wasn’t scary so our very perceptive 3-year old wouldn’t freak out.

This time around we lost a few branches on trees, the most notable being this one:

Giant stick in the ground. It's not as dead as it looks in this pic.

 The Harold is for scale.

And the peonies took a beating from the torrential rain:

Not under a canopy of the trees...poor things.

It was a huge amount of rain.  This is Tara’s dinosaur pool, and was previously empty of all water.  We weighted it down with a kitty litter box full of sand so it wouldn’t blow away, thus the litter – check out the amount of rain water:

 Almost 3 inches?

But the roses did just fine:

 Pretty.

We’re supposed to get more severe weather this afternoon and evening…maybe we’ll have more interesting sticks strewn about tomorrow…

Good to see yall didn’t get blown away. I didn’t have any damage, at least from what I have noticed so far. I should have taken some pics or video of the storm. Darn.

  2. Lauren says:

So did you leave it in the yard? It would come in handy in the winter for marking snow depth!

  3. Brad says:

I use that same brand of litter! Did I know that already? I actually tested several brands, and Scoop Away did the best job of suppressing unpleasant smells.

  4. Beth says:

Um…it’s your kitty litter box. You packed up those white dishes you didn’t want to send them home with Mom and Dad a year ago March. They all fit in there perfectly.
We don’t really use litter. Bobbie-the-wondercat is trained to go outside.

I don’t recommend doing that if you want to continue using it as a pool. We did that one year and the pool got so gunky with ewwww, that we chucked it and bought another. But that was Texas, and it doesn’t freeze there, so it might be different in NE.

  6. Beth says:

The stick is still in the yard, yes. We’ll probably leave it until Harold mows again.
The pool is inflated and deflated with the seasons. Heck we don’t even leave water in it from day to day – the mosquitos breed too quickly, and the wind blows every leaf from here to Iowa straight into our pool. (It’s a kid’s pool, only holds about a foot of water total.)

  7. Brad says:

Hahaha! Maybe I need to start a second memory archive. You guys won’t make fun of me too bad when I TOTALLY loose it, will you? (Actually, I guess I won’t remember, so have as much fun as you like!)
