First harvest.

Asparagus.  Yes.  Delightful asparagus.  I often forget we have an asparagus patch come Spring, and it most certainly takes me by surprise when I get a harvest so early…after 4 years, you would think it wouldn’t surprise me anymore…but it does.

This year’s first harvest was simply divine.  Just enough for dinner.  Perfect.

 Yum.

Dnag it! I eagerly wait for my asparagus to come up, and all I’m getting is spindly little stems the width of skewers. I’m still eating them, but just out in the garden. They aren’t big, meaty, meal-sized stems like you have.

    Grrrr…

What the what the? Your plants must be much farther along, see how much further….east… you live.

I’m going outside to see if we have anything to eat!

i’m so jealous! Maybe I should plant some…

They look divine! How do you prepare them?

Question to all gardeners out there: Can artichokes be grown in MD?

  5. Beth says:

I just steam them. I’m a vegetable purist. I don’t like sauces or dressings or dips very much. Purist.

  6. Brad says:

Yes, you can grow artichokes in Maryland, but you must plant them NOW. They take a while to mature. In other places, they would be perennial. Here, winter kills them. Artichokes are giant flower buds. If you let them open, they become beautiful purple thistles.

Can I grow them in a pot? Or must they be in a lot?
