Cardinal Couple…

It must be getting closer to spring…

I put this plant pot saucer out about three weeks ago and filled it with bird seed because the high temps were in the teens and I felt really sad about all the birdies outside scrounging for food.  I traditionally don’t leave bird seed out because Bobbie the Wondercat kills birds, and it made me feel guilty that I might be luring some poor unsuspecting bird to it’s death, but that’s another story.

I can see the saucer right out the kitchen window, which is nice, because I spend half my life by that window.  The past few days I have caught a glimpse of a cardinal.  A boy cardinal.  But just yesterday, I saw his girl, too.  The pictures are poor, at best, because I was taking them through the miserably dirty kitchen window, but still.  A handsome cardinal couple, visiting my saucer.  (I’ll be buying a for-real bird feeder today, one that’s on a pole so Bobbie can’t reach them…turns out I like watching the birds visit my saucer…).

 Cardinal boy.

 And his girl.

Aw, I was just thinking that I should put out some birdseed. That would mean going to buy some, of course, and that’s too much trouble. Good for you, Bird Girl!

Yes, spring is coming & love is in the air!

And your kindness to God’s animal kingdom warms my heart, it’s so unlike your one brother’s animal agenda. BTW: does your other brother get kicks out of killing small defenseless animals?

(and I feel like a bird brain, but how did you know it was a male & female? Are only the males red?)

In the bird world, and in fact the animal world in general (except for humans), the male of the species is always more colorful/decorated. It’s his job to convince the female to let him mate, so the women can be drab, boring and ugly and it doesn’t matter one bit to the guys…

Funny how in the human realm it’s almost the opposite, isn’t it?

Oh, and Brent killed lots of innocent birds with his BB gun in his youth. I suspect, given opportunity, he’d probably still enjoy that…they get it from our Dad. Dad’s childhood exploits have caused me to leave the dinner table on more than one occasion…

It may surprise you all to know that I have a birdfeeder and I fill it regularly. Birds eat bugs. They eat bugs that threaten my garden. Since they are a CONstructive presence in the garden rather than a DEstructive one, I like having them around. And since they aren’t destroying everthing like those cursed bunnies, I would even say that they’re cute. Plus, they don’t bleed enough when you shoot them.

Mostly it’s sparrows and turtle doves in my yard.

We noticed that bleeding thing this weekend… maybe I can get the kids to post about their bleeding (or not) bird experience later this week.
